History of Sighișoara (German: Schässburg)
The origins of Sighișoara date back to the 12th century, when German settlers—the Transylvanian Saxons—founded the city. Over the centuries, Sighișoara developed into an important center of trade and craftsmanship. Even today, the medieval atmosphere remains virtually unchanged, giving visitors the feeling of traveling back in time.

The town is particularly well-known as the birthplace of Vlad III Drăculea, better known as Vlad Tepes (the Impaler). His historical figure later served as inspiration for Bram Stoker’s world-famous novel *Dracula*.

The city’s landmark is the imposing Clock Tower. Standing about 64 meters tall, it towers over the Old Town and offers a magnificent view of the rooftops of Sighișoara and the surrounding countryside from its observation deck. Inside is the City History Museum.

Defensive Towers Around the City
Sighișoara was once surrounded by a mighty city wall with numerous defensive towers. Many of these towers have survived to this day and were formerly defended by various craft guilds. Particularly worth seeing are the Tailors’ Tower, the Blacksmiths’ Tower, and the Rope-Makers’ Tower.

Birthplace of Vlad III Drăculea
Located in the heart of the Old Town is the house where, according to legend, Vlad III Drăculea (Vlad III’s family name, meaning “House of the Dragon”) was born. Today, the historic building houses a restaurant and serves as a reminder of the famous story surrounding Dracula.

Culture, Events, and Festivals
Every year, many events take place in Sighișoara. The restaurants in Sighișoara offer both traditional Romanian cuisine and Transylvanian specialties. Typical dishes such as sarmale (stuffed cabbage rolls), mici (grilled meatballs), goulash, and homemade soups—including the world-famous Romanian ciorba—are on the menu, along with regional wines and desserts.
