Shoemakers’ Tower in Sighisoara (Schäßburg) | Mures County

The Shoemakers’ Tower, first mentioned in documents in 1522, was rebuilt in 1681 after the fire of 1676 and has the shape of a hexagonal prism with unequal sides.

The jagged roof with two observation turrets on the south and north sides gives it a special appearance. From this tower comes the stone plaque with the city’s oldest coat of arms and the motto “Nomen Domini, turris fortissima” (translated: The name of the Lord is the strongest fortress), which is kept in the History Museum in the Turnul cu Ceas (Clock Tower) in the city of Sighisoara (German: Schäßburg).

After the Second World War, the appearance of the tower underwent some changes. The windows were widened and the entrance was altered, and the external staircase was added in later years.

Sighișoara (in German Schäßburg, in Hungarian Segesvar) is one of the most important towns in Mureș county, in the Transylvania region of Romania.

The city of Sighisoara (German: Schäßburg / Schäßburg, Hungarian: Segesvár) is one of the most important and also most colorful towns in Mureș County.

Schäßburg is located in the historical region of Siebenbürgen (Transylvania) in the heart of Romania and is also named as a possible birthplace (around 1431 — the alternative would be Nuremberg) of Vlad III Drăculea / Țepeș.
