The city of Sighisoara (known as Schässburg / Schäßburg in German and Segesvar in Hungarian) is one of the most significant and colorful cities in Mures County.

Schässburg is located in the historic region of Transylvania, in the heart of Romania. Thanks to Mr. Iercosan Marian for the photo.

The Casa cu Prispa guesthouse is located just about 3 km south of Sighisoara / Schässburg. It’s the perfect place to stay for anyone who doesn’t want to be right in the city but still wants to be close by.

This traditional house has been lovingly restored. The original veranda and rooms have been preserved, while the house has been equipped with all the amenities a guest could wish for. A seasonal swimming pool, sauna, hot tub, barbecue area, children’s playground, and a multipurpose sports field are available, along with plenty of peace and nature.

Located directly on the Via Transilvanica and just a few hundred meters (400 meters) from the Monastery of Saint Dimitrie, it is an oasis of tranquility for relaxing, hiking, and spending quality time with your loved ones while exploring the Transylvania region.

It’s warm—many would even say hot—and everything seems to be moving a bit slower, not just for the people.

If you want to see the “chill” cats, just take the path up from the alley with the umbrellas to the clock tower. It seems like it’s especially nice to sleep here on both the left and right sides 🥰

The Shoemakers’ Tower, first mentioned in a document in 1522, was rebuilt in 1681 following the fire of 1676 and has the shape of a hexagonal prism with unequal sides.

The jagged roof with two observation towers on the south and north sides gives it a distinctive appearance. From this tower comes the stone plaque bearing the city’s oldest coat of arms and the motto “Nomen Domini, turris fortissima” (translated: “The Name of the Lord is the strongest fortress”), which is preserved in the Historical Museum in the Turnul cu Ceas (Clock Tower) in the city of Sighișoara (Schäßburg).

After World War II, the tower’s appearance underwent several changes. The windows were widened and the entrance was altered; the exterior staircase was also added in later years.

Sighisoara is one of the few medieval towns in Europe that is still completely preserved and inhabited. Built by the Transylvanian Saxons, the old town towers over the modern part of Sighisoara, which is situated on the Tarnava Mare River (in German: Große Kokel) and its surrounding countryside.

From July 24 to 26, 2026, THE Medieval Festival will take place in Sighisoara / Schässburg, and it’s a MUST-SEE for all fans of the Middle Ages, knights, and princesses 🥰

From Friday (July 24) at 7 p.m. through Sunday (July 26) at 10 p.m., there will be many, many events taking place at various locations throughout the fortress and town.

The Church of Saint Nicholas in Densuș (Demsdorf), Hunedoara County in western Romania, is the oldest stone church in the country.

It was built in its present form in the 13th century on the site of a 2nd-century Roman temple, using materials from the Dacian fortress of Sarmizegetusa. The church contains 15th-century murals depicting Jesus in traditional Romanian clothing.

According to Romanian historians, there was once a Dacian temple on the site of the present-day church, built for the god Zamolxis. Later, when the Romans conquered the area, they erected another temple there, dedicated to the god Mars. Considering its broader history, the origins of this church in Densuș date back to the 4th century AD, making it the oldest church in Romania and Southeast Europe.

The city of Targu Mures (Marosvasarhely in Hungarian and Neumarkt am Mieresch in German), first mentioned in historical records in 1300, is located on the Mures River (Mieresch in German, Maros in Hungarian) on the route from Brasov to Cluj-Napoca.

Targu Mures was founded by the Székelys. The city was first mentioned in a document in 1300 as Forum Siculorum. Like the history of all of Transylvania, the city’s history was shaped by the Kingdom of Hungary, the Principality of Transylvania, and—from the end of the 17th century—the Habsburg Monarchy, later Hungary, and then Romania.

Sighisoara is one of the few medieval towns in Europe that is still completely preserved and inhabited. Built by the Transylvanian Saxons, the old town overlooks the modern part of Sighisoara, which is situated on the Tarnava Mare River (in German: Große Kokel) and its surrounding countryside.

The monastery, a community dedicated to its patron saint, “Saint Dimitrios the Great Martyr, the Myrrh-Bearer,” is located just four kilometers south of downtown Sighisoara (known as Schässburg in German).

In earlier times, the Aurel Vlaicu district was a village inhabited by Romanians near the medieval Saxon fortress. Over time, however, it was integrated into the outskirts of Sighisoara, to which it now belongs. The area has retained its rural character and natural atmosphere, far from the noise of the city. The wooded surroundings and the beauty of the landscape lend it a picturesque and tranquil character, and the path leading up to the monastery gradually immerses visitors in the atmosphere of silence and prayer that prevails in this place.

The village of Saschiz (in Saxon: Keist, Kaest; in German: Keisd; in Hungarian: Szaszkezd) is part of the municipality of the same name in Mures County, Transylvania. High up on the mountain sits the fortress of the same name.

Saschiz is located on the way from Rupea to Sighisoara, about 15 km before Sighisoara.

At the Fortress Square in Schässburg / Sighisoara, take the street on the left, up the hill and toward the Wooden Staircase. It’s the fourth or fifth building on the left, just before the 5-star Hotel Fronius.

We were there in June and it is beautiful 🥰 Not crowded, yet lively with countless places you want/should see and wonderful spots to relax, linger… and enjoy.

It’s a 2-minute walk from the hotel, parking is everywhere, and the temperatures were perfect: about 30°C during the day and 18 to 22°C at night. If you’re in the area, we can recommend Sighisoara / Schässburg 1,000% 👍😍

Unassuming, but definitely not to be missed! From the Fortress Square in Schässburg / Sighisoara, take the street on the left, uphill toward the Covered Stairway. It is the fourth or fifth building on the left, just before the five-star Hotel Fronius.
