Schässburg is one of the few medieval towns in Europe that has been completely preserved and is still inhabited today. Built by the Transylvanian Saxons, the old town rises above the newer part of Sighisoara, which lies along the Tarnava Mare River (German: Große Kokel) and the surrounding area.

We arrived in Schässburg yesterday (June 8, 2026), and the “weather god” rewarded us with perfect lighting for photos. A wonderful day and many, many beautiful pictures that are yet to follow.

The city of Sighisoara (German: Schäßburg / Schässburg, Hungarian: Segesvár) is one of the most important and also one of the most colorful cities in Mures County.

Sighisoara is located in the historic region of Transylvania (Siebenbürgen), in the heart of Romania.

We were there in June last year and already twice this year … and it’s simply beautiful again and again

The town of Sighisoara (German: Schäßburg / Schässburg, Hungarian: Segesvár) is one of the most important and also most colorful towns in Mures County. It is located in the historic region of Transylvania (Siebenbürgen), in the heart of Romania.

It is not overcrowded, yet lively, with countless places you want/should see and wonderful spots to relax, linger… enjoy.

Anyone who climbs the steps up to the entrance/gate of the Clock Tower will, at the end (by the Taschler House), certainly see four to five cats.

They’re always there in that corner, relaxing, enjoying (cat) life and observing visitors from the wall, from a flight of steps or, now newly, directly from a little “basket” made for them in the middle of the greenery

The village of Saschiz (in Saxon: Keist, Kaest; in German: Keisd; in Hungarian: Szaszkezd) is part of the municipality of the same name in Mures County, Transylvania. High up on the mountain sits the fortress of the same name.

Saschiz is located on the way from Rupea to Sighisoara, about 15 km before Sighisoara.

The Clock Tower is the landmark of Sighisoara (German name: Schäßburg) and … a wonderful viewing platform overlooking the city of Sighisoara.

The tower (Turnul cu Ceas) was built in the second half of the 14th century as a defensive structure for the main gate of the citadel and as the seat of the town council (until the end of 1656). The Clock Tower acquired its current appearance at the end of the 17th century after a devastating city fire on April 30, 1676, which spread from the lower town and also engulfed the tower. Including its weather vane, the Clock Tower has a total height of about 64 meters. The walls are 2.4 meters thick at ground level, the masonry reaches a height of 39.5 meters (since 1804), and the tower contains five floors. On the top floor, the tower is surrounded by an open wooden gallery that served both as a fire watch and as a lookout over the surrounding area of the city.

The village is located in a side valley between Medias (Mediasch) and Sighisoara (Schäßburg) in Sibiu County. In addition to the very well-preserved Evangelical fortified church, there is the recently renovated hill church in the German Evangelical cemetery. A few Transylvanian Saxons still live in the village.

Pictures of the Sighisoara Monastery from today, just now … not even an hour old and sent to us directly from the site by our dear Roland.

The monastery with communal life, dedicated to the patron saint “Saint Great Martyr Demetrius the Myrrh-streamer,” is located just four kilometers south of the city center of Sighisoara (in German Schässburg).

In earlier times, the Aurel Vlaicu district was a village inhabited by Romanians near the medieval Saxon fortress. Over time, however, it was integrated into the outskirts of Sighisoara, to which it belongs today. The area has preserved its rural appearance and natural atmosphere, far from the noise of the city. The forested surroundings and the beauty of the landscape give it a picturesque and contemplative character, and the path leading up to the monastery gradually lets you immerse yourself in the atmosphere of silence and prayer that prevails in this place.
